Engineering has been a critical aspect of human culture and existence since the beginning of creation. It is a critical piece of the human experience that influences everything we do and all that we are. Engineering has been used to create tools that have changed our existence as a species, including the invention of writing, the invention of the wheel, and the invention of the airplane. Engineering has also changed our relationships with our fellow humans. Engineers have worked with astronauts to help them survive life’s challenges.
We do not care about the engineering component. We want to make it easier to do the things that we do. The only thing that we care about the most is the engineering component. A human needs engineering if they can build a self-driving car.
It may seem like a basic human need, but in fact it is a huge human resource. There are over 150,000 engineers in the U.S. alone. Of the approximately 1,000,000,000 people who work in manufacturing, the engineer occupies the top 10 positions. In fact, the manufacturing sector accounts for over half of all jobs in this country. The value of an engineer is about one-tenth of a cent.
In an industry as valuable as manufacturing, engineers are a very scarce resource. A study of all the software projects in the world over the past 10 years found that only about 4,000 people in the company actually worked on these projects. Engineers are scarce because they are expensive and they are highly specialized. For example, most engineers do not work with 3D printing or robotics, but they do work with computers, sensors, and the internet.

Of course, that leaves the question of “should we deprioritize engineering?” I don’t think we should, however. It’s a good career with a lot of upside. It’s also one of the biggest industries on the planet, so people who are good at it are extremely valuable. One of the smartest people I know started his career as a programmer, but eventually moved into a position of engineering leadership and has earned a lot of respect and admiration for his work.
I think what we should do is start taking on more engineers. It makes sense, if you have talent, you can work in any industry and eventually get into management. But, I think we should also start taking on more of the less-talented, which is what I would do if I were starting out. I don’t think I was as good as I could have been because I was too concerned with myself and what I could accomplish.
Deprioritize engineers is a good way to get to know someone better. I don’t think it’s a good idea to give them too many responsibilities. When you have a lot of jobs, you don’t know what your priorities are. And a lot of your priorities are not on the job. If you have a lot of jobs, you have to prioritize. You can’t just be a great person and do everything. You have to prioritize at some point.
Deprioritize engineers is a good idea. But make sure you aren’t giving them too many responsibilities you’re not giving them time to perform. You’ve got to give them enough projects to be able to accomplish them. If you only gave them 4 projects at work, then they probably wouldn’t be able to finish all those projects. That’s just the way it is.
We have a lot of high-pressure customers here. We could make a new movie or make another new TV, but we have to have a lot of time to get our heads to the ground. The second thing is, I don’t think we’ll be able to keep getting more and more out of these people. Most of these people are just hanging out in the dark.
